Meeting With Shannon Liss-Riordan, THE Leading Lawyer Pursuing Economic Justice For Uber, Lyft And Taxi Drivers

Today, January 18, 2017, I had an amazing meeting with Shannon Liss-Riordan.

We are now exploring how taxi medallion owner operators have been victims of predatory lending by the Top 12 Big Taxi lenders plus smaller Boston-based banks and hard money lenders.

I first heard a lot about Shannon from my colleague, Donna Blythe-Shaw, Founder and Representative of the USW Boston Taxi Drivers Association, 2007-2016.

Shannon, Donna and I don’t agree on all issues revolving around Uber. However —

We share a passion for economic justice for ALL Uber, Lyft and taxi drivers.

Shannon is also extremely familiar with the victimization of taxi medallion owner operators by Big Taxi in New York, Chicago and Boston.

Shannon’s groundbreaking work has been profiled numerous times nationally. She has been referred to as the “worker’s champion” and by her peers as the “reigning plaintiffs’ champion”.

Both she and her partner Harold Lichten have argued numerous cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the First, Second, Third, Seventh, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits, as well as before the highest courts of Massachusetts, New Jersey, Hawaii, and New York.

Shannon has brought landmark litigation on behalf of Uber drivers, as well as workers for other so-called “sharing economy” companies, and it has established and won numerous cases on behalf of workers who have been misclassified as independent contractors throughout the country, in a wide variety of industries, including the trucking, limo, cleaning, adult entertainment, cable installer, and call center industries.

In addition, Shannon has been a pioneer in the field of employment discrimination based on disability, race, and sex. Big Taxi’s owner operator victims are overwhelmingly people of color.

Attorneys Harold Lichten and Shannon Liss-Riordan have tried many jury trials in state and federal court both as class actions and cases for individual workers, and have repeatedly won judgments in the millions of dollars.

Big Taxi has deep pockets. I’ve always supported a claw back strategy reaching back to 1996.

Please join me in my enthusiasm for doing whatever we can to help this Giant in Economic Justice to determine the best legal arguments and assemble the best evidence to defeat Big Taxi on behalf of their thousands of victims.
